The verdict
The iPhone 17e is the better value for most people: a newer chip, twice the base storage and a lower unlocked price at Apple. Choose the iPhone 16 if you use the ultrawide camera for landscapes, groups or close-ups; the iPhone 17e has a single rear camera.
What they share
Both have a 6.1-inch OLED display, IP68 water and dust resistance, MagSafe wireless charging and USB-C. Both are eSIM only in the US, with no physical SIM tray.
Cameras
Both have a 48MP main camera. GSMArena found the iPhone 16’s main camera close to the iPhone 17’s in daylight and low light, and the iPhone 16 adds an ultrawide camera with macro mode. The iPhone 17e has the main camera only.
Chip and storage
The iPhone 17e uses the A19 chip and starts with 256GB. The iPhone 16 uses the A18 and starts with 128GB. If you keep lots of photos and video on the phone, the 17e’s extra storage is worth more than it looks.
Price
Unlocked, the iPhone 17e costs less than the iPhone 16 at Apple’s list price. Apple’s advertised iPhone 16 price includes a $30 discount that requires activating with AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout; the cards below show the unlocked “Connect to any carrier later” price.
