Best budget phone overall6.7"6.7" Full HD AMOLED, 120Hz
$379.99 Samsung list price, 128 GB, unlocked, checked Oct 19, 2026
A 120Hz AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chip, microSD expansion and six promised Android upgrades. GSMArena rated its battery endurance good; the tradeoffs are slow charging and IP64 rather than IP68.
Tradeoff: The verified unlocked configuration has 128GB of built-in storage.
$269.99 Samsung list price, 128 GB, unlocked, checked Oct 19, 2026
The same six-upgrade promise and an AMOLED screen for $110 less than the A27. Expect a 90Hz display and, per GSMArena, sluggish everyday performance on the 4GB model.
$199.99 Motorola list price, 128 GB, unlocked, checked Oct 18, 2026
One of the few new unlocked phones still listed at $199.99 after the 2026 price increases. It has a headphone jack, microSD and eSIM; Android Police got two days per charge but noted stutters.
$399.99 Motorola list price, 128 GB, unlocked, checked Oct 18, 2026
IP68 and IP69 protection, a Full HD screen, a headphone jack and security updates through January 2029. GSMArena found battery endurance solid but charging slow.
Tradeoff: The phone weighs 208g and has a 6.8-inch screen.
$499 Nothing list price, 128 GB, unlocked, checked Oct 18, 2026
The only phone here with a 3.5x periscope zoom camera, plus a 144Hz AMOLED screen. Verizon activation needs a call to support, so it suits AT&T and T-Mobile users best.
$329.99 TCL list price, 128 GB, unlocked, checked Oct 18, 2026
A 6.9-inch matte NXTPAPER screen with dedicated reading modes, IP68 and microSD. There is no headphone jack, and we have not yet confirmed carrier support for the US model.
Tradeoff: The phone weighs 207g and has a 6.9-inch display.
What will you spend? Prices on this site are the maker’s regular unlocked list price, not a sale price. Sales are common, so a phone listed above your budget may still fit on the day you buy.
Which carrier do you use? An unlocked phone still has to support your carrier’s network. Each phone page shows whether the maker or carrier confirms AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile support, and marks it Unknown when nobody does.
How long will you keep it? A phone that stops getting security updates becomes riskier to use. Samsung’s current A series promises six Android upgrades; Motorola’s budget phones get fewer, with security end dates published per model.
What changed in 2026
Budget phones got more expensive as memory chip prices rose. Samsung raised the Galaxy A17 5G from its $199.99 launch price to $269.99, and Motorola moved the Moto G (2026) from $199.99 to $299.99. That pushes the real entry point for a good new phone closer to $300. If your budget is lower, consider last year’s models like the Moto G (2025), wait for a sale, or look at refurbished phones.
What about iPhones?
No new iPhone costs less than $500. The iPhone 17e starts at $699 unlocked with 256GB of storage. See our budget iPhone guide for new and refurbished options.
How we pick
We research; we do not test phones ourselves. Specs, prices and software support come from the maker’s US pages, and every performance, battery or camera claim names the outlet that tested it. Read how we choose for the full method.
For most US buyers, the Samsung Galaxy A27 5G is the best balance of screen, speed and software support for under $400. If $300 is your limit, the Galaxy A17 5G keeps the same six-upgrade promise.
Why are budget phones more expensive in 2026?
Memory chip prices rose sharply. Samsung and Motorola raised the US list prices of several budget models by $50 to $100 during 2026, so fewer new phones are listed under $200 than a year earlier. Sales still happen, so check the current price at the store.
Is an unlocked phone better than a carrier phone?
An unlocked phone lets you switch carriers and keep the phone, but it is not automatically compatible with every network. Read our guide to unlocked and carrier-locked phones before you buy.
Should I buy a refurbished phone instead?
A refurbished phone can get you a better model for the same money, but check the warranty, the battery condition and how many years of software updates are left. Our refurbished vs new guide explains what to look for.
Which budget phones get the longest software support?
Samsung promises six Android upgrades for the Galaxy A17 5G, A27 5G and A37 5G. Motorola publishes security-update end dates per model; the Moto G Power (2026) is listed through January 2029.
